The 2nd of the Top 11 Labor History Landmarks in New York City are the Tenements on 6th or 7th Streets, off the Bowery.
The overcrowded, poorly lighted and ventilated tenements of the Lower East Side were once home to countless Jewish immigrants. In the late 19th century, many tenement apartments doubled as garment workshops. The industry began to move from the cramped setting of the tenement to large loft buildings in the early 1900s, but few safety innovations were introduced.
