Debbie Friedman: In our thoughts

The album cover of Debbie Friedman at Carnegie Hall, the milestone recording of Debbie Friedman's sold out concert at Carnegie Hall on January 7, 1996.

Fifteen years ago today, Debbie Friedman gave a sold out concert at Carnegie Hall, commemorating 25 years as one of the Jewish community's most beloved singers. Yesterday, Friedman was hospitalized for pnemonia. JTA reports that she is currently sedated and on a respirator.

Debbie Friedman began recording on her own label in 1972 and has since recorded 20 albums that have sold over 200,000 copies. Today, her music is sung in synagogues across the U.S. and has become so widespread that, for many, it is thought of as "traditional."  Her "Mi Sheberach" prayer for healing has become the fastest adopted liturgical melody in both the Reform and Conservative movements. This week, we sing the "Mi Sherberach" for her.

The Jewish community on Twitter is discussing her condition and sharing their wishes and prayers for her recovery using the hashtag #DebbieFriedman. They are sharing this wonderful tribute video to Debbie Friedman on Youtube.

If you would like to see more, you can watch a clip from A Journey of Spirit, a documentary about Debbie Friedman, in JWA's multimedia exhibit, Jewish Women and the Feminist Revolution.

Double your impact to amplify Jewish women’s stories—
All gifts matched up to $35,000

Before you close this article, please consider supporting the Jewish Women’s Archive and uplifting Jewish women’s voices.

At JWA, we preserve the voices of Jewish women and gender-expansive people past and present, share them freely with millions online, and empower a new generation of Jewish feminists to lead with courage, creativity, and conviction.

But none of this happens without you. JWA is an independent nonprofit— we rely on people, like you, who believe that history belongs to all of us and that the voices of Jewish women must remain powerful, and heard.

This month, a generous JWA board member will match every gift dollar for dollar—up to $35,000—through June 30. Your contribution goes twice as far right now.

Every contribution—no matter the size—helps us document, teach, and inspire through Jewish women’s stories.

It takes less than a minute to make a difference.
