Kay Albert-Spector
Kay Albert-Spector was born in Boston’s South End to Latvian immigrant parents and spent her early years in Dorchester, where she developed a lifelong commitment to music as a pianist, teacher, and performer; she later built a varied career that included radio work, hotel administration in Jewish resort communities, and extensive volunteer musical service in the Greater Boston area, particularly in Winthrop, where she lived for over fifty years. She married first Harry Spector, who later passed away, with whom she had two sons, Stephen and Murray. She later married Edward (Eddie) Albert and settled in Winthrop.
This interview documents Kay's childhood in Boston’s South End and Dorchester within a Latvian Jewish immigrant family; her early musical training, piano teaching, and performance experiences in radio, dance schools, and social settings; and her later work in Jewish resort hotels in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Albert reflects on family relationships, religious practices, marriage and motherhood, and her long residence in Winthrop, Massachusetts. She discusses her extensive involvement in music as both a profession and a form of personal fulfillment, including volunteer performances in community and religious settings. The interview also addresses experiences of loss, changes in community life, and her perspectives on health, education, and values for future generations.
