David Spaner

David Spaner has been a feature writer, movie critic, reporter, and editor for numerous newspapers and magazines. He has also been a cultural/political organizer (Yippie and manager of the legendary punk band The Subhumans). He is the author of Dreaming in the Rain: How Vancouver Became Hollywood North by NorthwestShoot It! Hollywood Inc. and the Rising of Independent Film, and Solidarity: Canada's Unknown Revolution of 1983. His most recent book, the novel Keefer Street, was nominated for the George Ryga Prize for Social Awareness in Literature and the Western Canada Jewish Book awards.

Jewish Women and the Yippie Movement

The Youth International Party (YIP, or Yippie!) was best known for its role in the protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The Yippies, whose membership included many Jewish feminists, merged counterculture with New Left politics by staging theatrical direct actions in protest of state violence.

Thelma Eisen

Tiby Eisen was a pioneering star of women’s sports in the 1940s and 1950s. An outstanding center-fielder in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), she starred for nine years in the only professional women’s league in the game’s history.
